Littleton 8th Grader Receives Award

On October 11, Megan Buehler, a student at Littleton Preparatory Charter School, received a Certificate of Appreciation from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

The award was presented during a surprise ceremony at her school, by Paul Sherbo, Director of Public & Inter-Governmental Affairs. Megan had no idea that a presentation would be made in front of her classmates at the school.

So far, in 2006, Megan has volunteered more than 100 hours of her time to help veterans. This is her 8th year of volunteering; she began when she was five.

To help prepare Ft. Logan National Cemetery for the annual Memorial Day observances, she helps place the 80,000 flags at the gravestones, place the floral arrangements and clean up afterward. It is only through such volunteer labor that this work can be done.

In addition to her work at Ft. Logan, she has been a long time volunteer at National Disabled Veterans Ski Clinic. She walks blind veteran’s dogs, runs errands and most importantly thanks the veterans for their service.

Kudos to Arapahoe County Clerk’s Dept Election Division

In 2005, many voters didn’t receive their ballots as scheduled. That, of course, led to cries of ineptitude, bad management or worse — foul play.
The fact that similar problems occurred in many counties in Colorado didn’t lessen the concerns in Arapahoe County.

All the affected county clerks began working on the problem, but Arapahoe County Clerk Nancy Doty led the way. She determined that the problems lay mainly with the trucking contractors delivering the ballots to the post offices.

Nancy Doty and her staff worked with the US Postal Service, who recognized the problem and agreed to change their procedures in conjunction with changes made by Arapahoe County and the ballot provider.

These changes needed testing and the USPS agreed to pay the cost of mailing Absentee Ballot Request Forms to each Arapahoe County Active Voter. We were the only voters in the state to receive this mailing, thanks to Nancy Doty’s efforts.

The problems seem to be worked out here and these efforts, combined with the audit procedures implemented by Nancy Doty, will help to ensure that future mail ballot elections in Arapahoe County will work smoothly.

Nancy A. Doty was elected as Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder in February 2004.She has 115 dedicated employees and serves the citizens of Arapahoe County as the designated election official for the county. She is also responsible for motor vehicle transactions, the recording of real estate documents, and serves as Clerk to the Board of County Commissioners.

Since assuming this position, she has become a State Certified Administrator of Elections. She is a member of the Colorado County Clerks Association (CCCA) and is Chair of the Central Region for CCCA. Nancy is a member of the Colorado Municipal Clerks, Election Center, and the International Association of Clerks, Recorders, Election Officials, and Treasurers (IACREOT). She serves on the Arapahoe County Executive Budget Committee and the Audit Committee.
