Wal-Mart Rezoning Passed

In a 4 to 3 vote late last night, the Littleton City Council passed the rezoning request to allow Wal-Mart to build on Santa Fe next to the $2 million open space purchased by the city in 2003.

The motion to approve the rezoning was made by Councilmember Pat Cronenberger and seconded by Amy Conklin. Mayor Jim Taylor and John Ostermiller joined them in the vote to allow Wal-Mart to build there.

Those who voted against it were Tom Mulvey, Doug Clark and Rebecca Kast.

I am very disappointed in those who voted to approve the rezoning. It seemed obvious to me that the building of this Wal-Mart was not the will of the people, yet the officials we elect to represent us totally disregarded the feelings of the public. I think we need to remember their votes the next time elections are held, and place OUR votes accordingly.

I’m wondering why Pat Cronenberger did not recuse herself from the vote, given her position on the same Columbine Memorial Committee that accepted $20,000 from Wal-Mart in 2004. Even if she was not on the Committee at the time of the gift, her involvement with an entity that took Wal-Mart money certainly smacks of impropriety.
